Intro Letter

Hi, my name is Katy Calhoun. I have lived in Escondido for most of my life, and I attended K-12 in the Escondido school system. I just returned from living in Santa Barbara for the past three years, where I received my BA from UC Santa Barbara. I am extremely happy to be back home in San Diego and I am very excited to be attending Cal State San Marcos.

I am a PC person. I recently bought a new laptop, which is undoubtedly my favorite piece of technology. I use my laptop multiple times throughout the day, and I cannot imagine life without the internet. Most of the time that I spend on my computer involves school work, using the internet to look for a job, or communicating via e-mail. Unlike the last university that I attended, computers and the internet seem to be a very important part of how the instructors at CSUSM run their classes. Being a student here will require me to spend even more time on my computer, and it will definitely be interesting to learn how to complete and submit coursework via the internet.

One of the many reasons I want to become a teacher is because I think it would be a great way to be able to give back to my community. As a life-long resident of Southern California and as a product of the Escondido school system, the College of Education’s commitment to “diversity, educational equity, and social justice” really spoke to me. I believe that it is important for all students to have an equal opportunity to learn and succeed in the classroom, regardless of individual differences. Although the Mission Statement did not influence my decision to attend Cal State San Marcos, I feel confident that the College of Education will help me to become a thoughtful and understanding teacher for students from many different backgrounds.
